Obstacles in the Path

A final post about bicycling -
(At least final for now.)

I've learned an important lesson that can be applied to life while riding my new bicycle this summer.

As I've wandered down the road, I've come upon obstacles: metal grates, rocks, glass, litter, and dead things. They all seem to be in my way at one point or the other. I usually could miss those dead things, but the rocks often seemed like magnets for my wheel.

One day I finally figured out how to avoid them. Don't look at the obstacle. Look at the pathway in between, the place where you want to ride.

Life is like a bike ride. Some days it is long, painful, and full of obstacles. (Not every bike ride is painful. And I suppose not every day is either.) Those obstacles seem to loom large in the pathway. I find that if I stare at them they seem to get larger and I clip them as I go by. Not a great thing for my bike or my ride.

But if I look down the path and notice the obstacle, find the path through the middle, and then keep my eye on the clear pathway, I head in the right direction and I don't get slowed down and caught up in the problems of the path.
